Who gets credit for reforms in NPSC?

Kohima, March 13 (MExN): Even as young civil service aspirants are jubilating over the reforms announced in the recruitment as well as other rules of the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) yesterday, political parties seem to be tussling over who the credit should go to.

The Naga People’s Front (NPF) today maintained that the major changes made in the recruitment and composition rules of NPSC cannot be attributed to the newly formed People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government.

“As much as the credit for bringing about transparency and meritocracy in the highest recruitment body of Nagaland State should go to the daring and wise decision of the then Chief Minister TR Zeliang, the efforts and sacrifices of the PSAN and other groups cannot be undermined,” asserted a press statement from Press Bureau, NPF Central Headquarters.

“To think that such reforms could be initiated even before the PDA could settle its internal disputes arising out of portfolio distribution and without convening a single sitting of the Cabinet to discuss the issue, is beyond any sensible person’s imagination,” the party further stated.

It recalled that the Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland (PSAN) comprising young and dynamic civil service aspirants had voiced out for change in the NPSC recruitment rules. “And in the month of December 2017, under the aegis of PCC under which the PSAN group was also a member party, held a protest at the Secretariat Junction after which on invitation from the then Chief Minister of Nagaland TR Zeliang, the PCC with all its member leaders held two rounds of deliberation, spanning 5-6 hours, at the Chief Minister’s Residential Office. In that meeting the Chief Minister had assured that their demands would be met and likewise, in the subsequent Cabinet Meeting that followed in the month of December 2017, the demands of the PSAN group were approved along with the much demanded Lokayukta Bill 2015,” NPF noted.

The statement asserted that the much chanted ‘Change is coming’ mantra of the PDA “must be manifested in reality while refraining from stealing accolades for things they have not done.”

Maintaining that the NPF party is “ever ready to play the role of a constructive opposition for the welfare and development of the State,” it further questioned, “but is the PDA government willing to work in accordance with the wishes and wants of the public?”

To be a leader is to be able to sacrifice for one’s flock with focus on the welfare of one’s followers, NPF stated, adding “Rio’s ‘Leading from the front’ policy without caring to look back and pacify his flock will sooner or later give room for his followers to desert him completely.”
