‘Why was Rs 1 crore left unguarded?’- AKMWC questions KMC

Kohima, June 4 (MExN): The All Kohima Municipal Ward Council (AKMWC) condemned the robbery committed at the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) office, where over Rs 1 crore of public money was stolen.

AKMWC in a press release issued by its President, Thejao Sekhose demanded law enforcement agencies to take immediate action to investigate the matter, apprehend the culprits and take stringent action deems appropriate.

The council also raised several questions regarding the security and handling of public funds by KMC authorities, including “why such a huge amount of public money were left unguarded and without proper security measures? Why wasn't the money deposited in the bank? Substantiate reasons? What was the purpose of the funds and how will KMC justify the loss?”

AKMWC has expressed concerns about potential complicity of KMC authorities in the robbery and has called for transparency and accountability in the investigation and thereby prove that the robbery is not stage managed.

Meanwhile, Association of Kohima Municipal Ward Council (erstwhile AKMWP) also expressed shock at the theft of such huge amount of money from KMC Office.

“The more shocking part is that, there is no CCTV within the KMC Office, nor the compound without any security personnel even as the KMC has asked that CCTV be installed within the business establishment,” AKMWC President Thejao Sekhose, and Media Secretary Kopelo Krome stated in a press release.

“The stolen money belongs to the public not their own. And since it was under their custody, because of their carelessness and negligence, they (KMC) should be held fully responsible,” the council demanded.

“Meanwhile, we acknowledge the support of the Government of the day. But we pray in the interest of the public that thorough investigation be carried out at the earliest in arresting the perpetrator(s) and give stringent punishment as per provision of the law,” AKMWC added.
