A woman succumbed to injuries after a physical altercation with her husband on December 24 evening in Kohima.
Informing The Morung Express of the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP), Kohima and PRO, Vitoshe Sumi said the incident occurred on December 24 at New Reserve, Phesama. The accused was identified to be a policeman.
The woman succumbed to her injury and was declared dead after she was taken to hospital by family members and the husband. The police, after completion of legal formalities including post mortem of the deceased, handed the body to family members.
The PRO informed that a Suo Moto case was registered at Women’s Cell, Kohima the next day, soon after which the husband was taken into custody where he is now under judicial remand. The case is currently under investigation.
Sources informed that the couple were frequently involved in altercations resulting in physical assault on various occasions, often under the influence of alcohol.
The accused, who is around 40 years of age, has also been suspended from services as per service rules in the backdrop of the incident.
The New Reserve Panchayat along with the women and youth organisations have condemned the incident and said that the panchayat would never allow such a person to reside in the colony as “he is not fit to be in any society.” It further conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and urged the authorities to punish the culprit at the highest level.
The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) said that “such a gruesome crime cannot be justified in anyway and is against our culture and religion. No one has the right to take law in our own hands.” It further urged the law enforcing authorities to give exemplary punishment in accordance with the law of the land.
The Chakhesang Mothers Association (CMA) meanwhile stated that “no cause can justify such brutality and senseless killing.” It appealed to all right thinking citizens to condemn the barbaric act and urged law enforcement authorities to carry out the investigation and hold those involved accountable.
