Wild elephants on rampage: Mekokla village seeks govt’s intervention

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 27 (MExN): A herd of wild elephants numbering around 30-35 entered inside the farming areas at Haili, some 7 kilometers away from Mekokla village under Wokha district and destroyed rubber and sugarcane plantations on the night of December 25 and early hours of December 26.

This was reported by the Mekokla Village Council (MVC) through a press release. According to the press release, loss of human lives was averted since most of the farmers were in the village to celebrate Christmas, adding that similar incident also occurred on November 16 where one farmer lost life and another was injured even as standing crops and a farm house were damaged after a herd of wild elephants went on rampage.

The MVC claimed that it had reported the matter to the concerned district administration and the forest department urging them to initiate remedial measures but no action has been taken up so far.

In this connection, the MVC has once again urged the district administration and the concerned department to activate wildlife controlling machineries and assist the damage and grant adequate compensation to the farmers for the damages incurred.
