Wildlife Week celebrated

Dimapur, October 9 (MExN): Wildlife Division, Dimapur and Intanki National Park, Peren jointly celebrated Wildlife Week on October 8 at Jalukiekam village with the theme ‘Speak for the voiceless (wildlife)’.

Bano Haralu, Managing Trustee, Nagaland Wildlife & Biodiversity Conservation Trust (NW&BCT), who was the chief guest, in her address, expressed concern over the drastic decline of wildlife in Nagaland due to deforestation and hunting. Pointing out that conserving wildlife is of utmost importance as Naga culture is closely connected with nature and wildlife, she maintained that decline or extinction of wildlife species like hornbill would be like losing Naga identity. She further noted that in nature, there is no greed but only interdependence among the living organisms and dependence on the environment.

Caroline (IFS), Wildlife Warden, Dimapur spoke about the importance of observing Wildlife Week every year and called upon the students, youths and all concerned to care for wildlife, speak for the voiceless (wild animals), and learn loving wildlife as the future of wildlife depends on “us”.

Heuneilung, Field Director, Intanki National Park urged the students to inculcate love and affinity towards wildlife. Dr. Zubeni (IFS) highlighted the interdependence in nature and how extinction of one species can affect others and the environment. N.G Sangzu, GB, Jalukiekam village also spoke on the occasion.

Singing and drawing based on ‘Nature and wildlife’ were done by students from different schools during the programme, which was attended by Village Councils of the fringe villages of Intanki National Park, students, youth, national workers and officials and staff of the wildlife wing.
