The fourth day of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly session continued the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s Address.
Responding to the Opposition’s statements on Christian atrocities in India and the BJP-NDPP alliance, Advisor Toshi Wungtung focused on the aspect of peace and the relationship between BJP and NDPP which is “a well defined relationship based on mutual trust and built on needs and aspirations of the people” and “has nothing to do with cultural extremism.” However, he condemned the atrocities against minorities such as Christians and Muslims, but followed it with a question, “Is the atrocities in India exclusively confined to BJP Rule?”
Wungtung also reminded that Nagas have never been influenced by such cultural extremism easily despite being surrounded by great philosophers, culture and religion in neighboring States. “We have stood firm and continued to do so.”
The Advisor assured that the alliance will focus on true development, need based policies. “We would like to assure that there is plenty for everybody's needs but not for anybody's greed. Therefore our government shall be based on cooperative democracy, federalist democracy, on need based governance and not greed-based governance,” stated Wungtung, adding there is a need to fulfill justice, well defined social policy and to address and reduce the socio economic and political imbalances.
“Therefore our focus needs to be based on peace and development. This alliance shall not deny development and the call for social justice.”
MLA YM Yollow spoke on the need to take up new avenues as well as boost the former ones for progress in Nagaland. “We should not go searching for organic. We are organic and we have been practicing organic farming for years. However, one of the setbacks is that we are still dependent on other states for our daily commodities,” said Yollow mentioning that the new avenues that need to be taken up are coffee plantation, rubber plantation. He further suggested that the Opposition can also work towards progress through the LADP fund for developing their areas.
