The lone Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Nagaland and General Secretary of Naga People’s Front (NPF) KG Kenye has said that his apprehensions regarding Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) have been cleared and he would support Bill if it is as per Amit Shah’s assurance.

In an interview with Rajya Sabha TV uploaded on its YouTube Channel on December 7, Kenye said that many apprehensions about CAB were cleared on December 3, when Union Home Minister, Amit Shah met various stakeholders from North East.

“Prior to December 3, we had lot of fears and apprehensions; but that evening, on the assurance of the Home Minister, Amit Shah, I think many have been put to rest,” said  the NPF General Secretary, when queried on his position right now.

“And as for my state, he has specifically assured us that the CAB will not override or overshadow the existing Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 and Inner Line Permit Act which is in operation now,” he informed.

“So, if it does not infringes or diminish the existing Act which is in operation there, then we have no problems,” he added.
Asked whether he would support the Bill in the Parliament, he answered positively with a caveat.

“If as his (Amit Shah) assurance, the draft Bill is in place as he assured us, then I’ll support it (sic).”
Keyne, however, said that there are still some apprehensions in some North Eastern States over the issue.
The CAB is set to be tabled in  the Lok Sabha on December 9.
