Wokha, December 18 (MExN): The District Administration of Wokha has issued a public advisory in view of the increased risk of forest fires, grass fires and accidental fires during the dry season. The advisory issued by Wokha Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Vineet Kumar, IAS, has called for strict compliance from all citizens, village councils, institutions, and stakeholders for strict compliance in the interest of public safety, protection of life and property, and conservation of forests and the environment.

The administration emphasised that the dry months, even a small spark can lead to uncontrollable fires, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of forest resources, agricultural land, wildlife, and public and private property. All residents have been urged to exercise utmost caution and responsibility.

Specific guidelines have been outlined for agricultural practices, particularly concerning jhum cultivation. The burning of forest areas, jhum fields, or agricultural residue is to be undertaken only after proper fire lines are created and under strict supervision.

Such activities are to be avoided during windy conditions and must never be left unattended under any circumstances. Individuals have been cautioned that they will be held personally responsible for any fire that spreads beyond their designated area. “Burning without adequate safety measures is strongly discouraged and may invite legal action,” it added.

For picnic, camping and outdoor activities, the advisory instructs visitors and camping groups to refrain from throwing lit matchsticks, cigarette butts or inflammable materials in open areas. “Picnic and camping groups must ensure that no fire is left unattended and that waste materials are disposed of safely,” it advised.

The use of firecrackers, sky lanterns, or open flames in open fields, near forests, dry grass, or habitations has been strongly discouraged for the duration of the dry season. The administration has advised against any celebratory use of fire in vulnerable areas.

Village Councils have been entrusted with a proactive role, tasked with actively monitoring their jurisdictions, creating fire safety awareness and regulating all jhum burning activities. The administration stressed that community cooperation and vigilance are essential to prevent major disasters.

The public has been asked to report any instance of fire or smoke should be reported immediately to Fire & Emergency Services, Police, the concerned Village Council or Administrative Officer.
The advisory stated that negligence leading to fire incidents may attract action under relevant provisions of law. “Persons responsible for causing fire damage may be held liable for losses and damages.”

Wokha Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar appealed to all citizens to act responsibly and cooperate in ensuring a fire-safe dry season. Protection of life, property, forests, and the environment is a shared responsibility. The advisory was issued in public interest.
