The inaugural programme of Wokha District Table Tennis championship organised by Wokha District Table Tennis Association (WDTTA) was held at the Indoor Badminton Stadium of Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha on December 12.
The programme was graced by Chief Election Officer, Nagaland Vyasan R as the guest of honour and District Youth Resource Officer, Wokha, K Libemo Jami as the special guest.
Vyasan R, in his speech expressed the strong friendship he holds with the people of Wokha as well as the organisers. He stressed that in Wokha district, the response is very less, and also the system is not very well organised for encouraging the players. However, he appreciated the members of WDTTA for organising the championship event, providing a platform for young talents to showcase their skills.
He highlighted that the district had untapped potential but lacked an organised association to encourage players, leading to unfulfilled results, a State IPR report added. ‘Though it is a very small step, yet, let us all not lose hope because later, it will result in creation of champions,’ he affirmed while urging the organisers to strive in every edition of championship. He expressed hope that the district could produce many accomplished players, making both the district and the state proud.
WDTTA Representative, Dr Kenny Ghosh, in his keynote address stated that the beginning of this journey is embarked with passion, dedication to pursuit excellence in the world of table tennis, and as the association orchestrated the much-anticipated the open tournament, they find themselves at the threshold of a remarkable sporting endeavor.
He added that this tournament not only signifies a gathering of athletes and enthusiasts but also serves as a beacon, guiding them towards the grand stage of the Nagaland Olympic & Paralympic 2024, an event poised to define the pinnacle of sporting achievements.
He remarked that WDTTA is driven by its unwavering commitment to the sport while standing as a testament to the unyielding spirit of nurturing talent, fostering inclusivity, and elevating the standards of table tennis within our community. He also encouraged seizing this opportunity not merely as a display of athletic prowess but as a celebration of the human spirit - a spirit that transcends limitations, defies odds, and unites.
A total of 20 players (16 male and 4 female) are participating in the event. The final match will be played on day two of the tournament.
The champions of the tournament will further represent Wokha district at the Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic which is to be held in 2024.
