Wokha DPDB to plant 5000 saplings during WED

Wokha, April 10 (DIPR): Wokha DPDB felt the urgent need to undertake plantation activity at Mt. Tiyi on World Environment Day, June 5, 2017. The decision was taken during the DPDB meeting held on April 10.  

Mt. Tiyi is popularly known as the “Abode of Souls” because of the associated legend that souls of people go there after they die. It is of immense importance for Wokha town due to the fact that Wokha town is located on Mt. Tiyi and is its catchment area. Due to development taking place over a number of years as well as human population expansion, the forest of Mt. Tiyi have become depleted and is also becoming devoid of flora and fauna.  

Vice Chairman DPDB & DC, Wokha Wezope Kenye, who chaired the meeting, urged the members to come forward and extend support for the success of the plantation. A successful plantation drive would not only mean improvement in the scenic beauty of the town but also markly increase the water holding capacity of the soil. It will also increase the biodiversity and lead to a healthier environment for the denizens of Wokha. Mt. Tiyi forest is a Protected Forest under Forest Department Wokha.  

District Employment Officer (DEO), Zuthunglo Ezung, while presenting departmental activities in the district said that, the duties and responsibilities of the Department is to enforce the Compulsory Notification of Vacancies (CNV) Act 1959. The other activities include Registration of job seekers, compilation and dissemination of various statistical data like Employment Marketing Information (EMI), both from public and private sector and sponsoring of candidates for various notified vacancies. In addition career counselling and vocational guidance, workshop in schools and colleges talk on various career options etc, are also undertaken by the Department. DEO also stated that the total number of registrations done at Wokha as on February 28, 2017 is 4461.  

District Evaluation Officer (DEO), Wokha, Etssorhomo Khuvung, while highlighting his departmental activities in the district said that the Department has undertaken two evaluation studies in 2016, namely function and performance of Village Development Board (VDBs) and study of Wokha-Merapani Road. He also said that for the current year the department has completed the field work of Marketing Facilities for Agri & Allied products.  

DC appeals Lotha Hoho to put bandh on hold  

Chairman Lotha Hoho, Mhao Lotha apprised the members that if the PWD (R&B) department does not fulfil the memorandum submitted by the two Hohos (Lotha & Rengma) for widening of National Highway-2 (NH-2) they will be compelled to impose bandh from April 19.  

In this regard, the DC informed that department officials will be visiting Wokha on April 11 and will hold consultative meetings with the District Administration and the concerned department for early execution of work. He therefore requested the two Hohos to put the bandh on hold.  

The Department of Food & Civil Supplies and Art & Culture were entrusted to present their departmental activities during the next DPDB meeting.
