Wokha: ‘Good coordination key for detection of human trafficking’

Wokha, July 5 (MExN): One-day training and capacity-building programme for anti human trafficking unit and other stakeholders dealing with prevention of human trafficking and rehabilitation of victims under Wokha district was held at Deputy Commissioner's conference hall on July 5. It was organised by Wokha District Administration and Sakhi One Stop Centre supported by National Commission for Women. 

According to a DIPR report, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS in his keynote said that no single organization can handle issues such as human trafficking single-handedly and urged all stakeholders, NGOs, and government agencies to come forwards and extend support in tackling such illegal crimes.

He stated that these issues revolve around various departments in the government along with civil societies. “There should be good coordination between various agencies for detection of human trafficking right from the village level organization to churches, police and other concerned government agencies should be very smooth and should work out a system to ensure that works are done in a coordinated fashion when it comes to detection, rescue, and rehabilitation of victims,” the DC highlighted. 

He said that rescued victims and families should be extended support from all sections so that the victims and families can come out from the depression they had gone through, the report stated. The DC also said that the public should be provided with proper information that there is enough protection available to safeguard the victims of human trafficking and other Acts against perpetrators committing the offense.

The Wokha Bar Association, President, Advocate Oren Humtsoe highlighted the concepts, different patterns, and dimensions of human trafficking. Wokha Police Station, SI Nzanbemo Kikon, and Advocate Shanchobeni P Lotha, Nodal Officer, OSC & Project Assistant WDLSA dwelled on cases reported, modus operandi of human trafficking in the district, the role of anti-human trafficking units, existing response system and legal mechanism to address human trafficking.

In the second session, DCPO (Social Welfare) Moasenla, Case Worker OSC Thungbeni Kikon, Psychiatrist DMHP, and Thungbeni Ngullie President, Lotha Eloe Hoho spoke on the topic, rescue and rehabilitation services for trafficked women and children (schemes under MWCD, GOI), Psycho-social impact of trafficking and support system required, Role of Civil Societies in preventing human trafficking and challenges’ and way forward to address human trafficking.
The training programme was chaired by Central Administrator OSC, Renthunglo Kikon.
