The Indoor Sports Hall Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was held at Police Reserve, DEF Ground Wokha on June 28 in the presence of Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS Deputy Commissioner & Chairman of District Sports Council, Wokha in the presence of Aotula T Imchen, IPS Superintendent of Police, Wokha.

In his address, Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS commended District Sports Officer Libemo Jami for his enthusiasm in articulating the requirements necessary for sports in the district. He emphasised that even facilities as basic as small table tennis setups lacked adequate space, highlighting the constraints identified by the District Sports Officer that necessitated action.

He outlined their exploration of various opportunities to leverage the development of sports facilities, highlighting the lack of such amenities in an advanced district like Wokha. He explained that upon discovering the National Sports Development Fund, they approached Ministry officials for guidance on proceeding. He acknowledged that the genuine need of Wokha District had resonated within the Ministry, resulting in successfully convincing the Ministry to support the project. 

Furthermore, he emphasised that the indoor sports stadium will include two table tennis halls, one badminton hall, and two squash courts. He mentioned that squash will be introduced for the first time, noting the talent he has observed among the people of Nagaland in racket-based games like badminton and table tennis. He expressed confidence that introducing squash will uncover new talent and bring recognition to the state.

 

Addressing the issue of drug abuse in the state, he highlighted the need for youth to have alternative avenues to explore and showcase their talents. He stressed the importance of providing ample opportunities in various fields, emphasizing that these resources should be accessible to all sections of society and sports associations, not limited to specific departments or officials.

Highlighting about the project, he stated that this project is unique because it is a small-scale project approved by the Ministry with a budget of 75 lakh. 

Aotula T Imchen, IPS in her short speech expressed that this project is like a dream come true. She credited the dynamic leadership of the outgoing DC of Wokha for swiftly materializing the project. She noted that although the project falls under police land, youth from all corners will benefit greatly. 

K Libemo Jami, District Youth Resource and Sports Officer mentioned that the project is unique because it has been directly funded by the Ministry without any deductions like GST. He stated that the Ministry has approved a budget of 75 lakhs and expressed optimism that the district will see the project completion in the shortest possible time. He described the hall as a gift to the Wokha Police and the public of Wokha as a whole. He highlighted that Wokha has vast talent however proper infrastructure and facilities hinders recognition of that talent. 

The programme was chaired and welcome address by K Libemo Jami, District Youth Resource Officer Wokha, Invocation by Zuben N Ngullie, Pastor Police Baptist Church, Wokha.
