Wokha orgs declare total shutdown on Nov 1

Wokha, October 30 (MExN): The Wokha Village Youth Organization (WVYO), Wokha Village Student’s Union (WVSU) and Wokha Village Eloe Ekhung (WVEE) have declared a total shutdown in Wokha district on November 1 from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The shutdown has been initiated after the deadline for the ultimatum served by the organizations to the PWD (NH) lapsed on October 29.

It may be mentioned that earlier, on September 29, the organizations had served a 30-day ultimatum to the PWD (National Highway) to immediately begin construction of single intermediate lane (NH-61/ NH-2) to two-lane road from Miropen Gate to Hammock Resort under Wokha district.

Highlighting the ‘pathetic’ road condition, the organizations had stated that vehicular movements have been disturbed, posing serious threats to vehicles and commuters.

They informed that widening of existing highway to two-lane commenced three years ago but formalities for commencement of excavation work are still under process and is the “main reason for delay and inaction.”

The organizations therefore issued an ultimatum to the PWD (NH), Government of Nagaland to complete all necessary formalities at the earliest and commence the work within one month with effect from September 29.

While the deadline expired on October 29, the concerned Department has failed to give any response within the stipulate date, the organizations stated on Saturday.

As such, they stated that they are “compelled to initiate a total shutdown” in Wokha district on November 1 from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm followed by general meeting at Police Point, Wokha Town at 10:00 am onwards. Medical, paramilitary and educational institutions have been exempted from the purview of the bandh.

All concerned citizens have also been requested to cooperate and the organizations further invited them to come up with related agendas and attend the meeting positively “for the common cause of the Lotha general public.”
