Wokha takes to the streets over rape, murder

Wokha, September 9 (DIPR): In a protest against the accused and condemnation of the rape and murder of late Roshila Humtsoe, the Kyong Eloe Hoho, Kyong Hoho and the Kyong Students’ Union jointly organised a protest peace rally at Wokha town on Tuesday.

Around 3000 protestors took to the streets of Wokha town carrying placards some of which read ‘No mercy should be shown to the rapist’, ‘respect women’s chastity’, ‘perish miyas’ and ‘save Naga women’. The chairman of the Kyong Hoho, Yansathung Jami, while addressing the gathering at the rally, appealed to the NGOs, government agencies and other organisations to cooperate in their fight for justice.

The rally culminated at the local ground from where officials of the three frontal parties of the Kyong community marched towards the DC’s office and submitted a memorandum with the following demands:

1. That, on arrest of all the accused the trial be started without any delay and punishment be awarded as per the provision of the land under which they have committed the offence. The punishment should be exemplary so that such offence would not be repeated in future and no bail be granted to any of the accused without taking the three parent parties into confidence; and in the event of failure, the district administration and the police department would be held solely responsible for any unwanted situation that may arise from public resentment.

2. Ex-gratia as compensation to be given to the victim’s father at the earliest.

3. Random issue of ILP to non-locals should end and verification and checking of ILP from time to time be implemented as a pre-emptive measure to control such crime by non-locals in our society.

Besides the father of late Roshila, other main speakers at the rally included Ralan Area Eloe Hoho chairperson, RASU president, president of Kyong Students Union, chairperson of Kyong Eloe Hoho and chairman of the Kyong Hoho.
