In an ill-fated incident, a 58-year-old woman died after she was struck by a speeding two-wheeler taxi in Kohima on February 16.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ADSP) and PRO, Kohima Police, Relo T Aye informed that the incident occurred at new NST colony along the one-way highway around 9 AM in the morning.
As seen in a CCTV footage circulated in social media, the woman is seen crossing the road when the speeding motorist rams into the woman who is thrown a few feet away by the impact. Authorities of Oking Hospital where the woman was rushed to after the incident declared her brought dead.
The police said a 23-year-old driver of the two-wheeler taxi was arrested and is currently under police custody.
Preliminary examination of the accident suggest that the accident occurred due to rash driving or over speeding as indicated in the footages, the police PRO further said. In this connection, a suo-moto case has been registered at North Police Station, Kohima for further investigation.
The Two Wheeler Taxi Association, Kohima said the driver is a member of its association.
In the wake of the incident, CCTV footages of the accident were largely circulated in social media sparking debate over two-wheeler taxis rash driving and flouting traffic rules.
One person alleged “there are many unreported accidents on pedestrians by two-wheelers taxi drivers. This has become a serious issue,” while another person underscored the need to have more speed breakers in crowded places.
Another person also expressed the need for law enforcing agencies to strictly implement the Motor Vehicle Acts with its accompanying penalties.
