Women called to assert their rights

Phek: A seminar on legal rights of women on merit, inheritance and health education-HIV/AIDs programme was held at Phek Town Hall on March 28. The programme was organised by Nagaland State Commission for Women in collaboration with National Commission for Women, New Delhi.

In the exhortation speech ADC Phek, Lovitoli expressed and gave her congratulatory note and gave thanks to the organisers for organising this kind of platform to sort out our rights and called upon the womenfolk to look at the provision of law which Indian Constitution provide us. She also stressed on the guarantee of equality before law, right to equality, non-discrimination against any citizen on the ground of religion, caste, race and sex and equality opportunity of all citizen of India. She also highlighted the importance of one’s right regarding legal rights of women and called upon the gathering to assert their rights.

In the introductory remark, Chairperson NSCW, Dr. Temsula Ao said that when we look back to the customary law, it has provided less privilege for which we need a change to improve our society and appealed upon the men folk to change their attitude and mindset so that we make the society a better place to live in.

The topic “marriage, divorce and inheritance” was discussed by various speakers including Kezungupe Tsuha, DPO Phek on behalf of Chakhesang Gazetted Officers Forum; Chevohu Lohe President DB’s Union Phek; Chinehu Khesoh and Sovenyi Sasu President CPO. Vote of thanks was proposed by Asangla Cholong Member NSCW.

In the second session, the topic “Legal Right of Women on Health and HIV/AIDs” was delivered by Meyielhi Kapfo where introductory remark was given by Chairperson NSCW, Dr. Temsula Ao and vote of thanks was proposed by President CMA, Zaposhelu.


‘Remove imbalances in our customary laws’
Meluri, March 29 (MExN): Seminar on marriage, divorce and inheritance was organised at Meluri by Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSWC) on March 27. A press note received here stated that ADC Meluri, John Tsuliese Sangtam welcomed the commission and expresses gratitude for their pro-active works.

NSCW Chairperson Dr. Temsula Ao appealed to all the Pochury leaders present to come together and find a just solution to remove the imbalances in our customary laws and practices which are still stacked against the interests of girls and women because these girls and women are your own and living in the same society. “This is the chance to become the pioneers of an enlightened Naga society, where men and women can work and live together as equals in all respects,” she said.

“We know that this is a serious issue and will need many frank and open constitutions with all sections of society, with elders, intellectuals and also women’s groups in order to arrive at a mutually agreed way forward without compromising the sanctity of our traditional practices. However, above all, such initiative must come from the men who will facilitate the dialogues and result in the desired amendments to the existing Customary Laws and Practices,” Dr. Temsula added.

Pochury Public Forum, President Ghachu, Pochury Gazetted Officers Union President Z. Myusietho Nyuthe, Pochury Students’ Union President Abel and Hd. DB Meluri Luorüsie, also spoke on the topic. In the second session of the seminar Dr. Chako, spoke on “Women Health-HIV/AIDS” .
