Women Development Dept endorse Naga textiles

Wokha, July 21 (DIPR): In a bid to promote Naga textiles, a team from Women Development Department (WDD) reached Wokha town on July 20, 2010. The team took photographs of Lotha ensembles that were put up at the Tourist Lodge, Wokha. Ancient traditional shawls, jewelries, ornaments, beads, head-gears, modern attires etc on display at the Tourist Lodge Wokha, was arranged and organised by the Kyong Eloe Hoho cultural committee with active cooperation by the Kohima Lotha Eloe Ekhung and Dimapur Lotha Eloe Ekhung. Mhalo TM and Abeni ET Ezung also extended their valuable services and took initiative in making the event a success. 

Also on display was the different process of cotton spinning, portraying how our ancestors brought life to the simple cotton yarn by using vegetable dyes, presented by the Wokha town Longsa Eloe Cultural group. The presentation amply proved the ingenuity and expertise of our ancestors, which has been passed on down the generations. Tsoktsu khen (rice pounding song) was presented by Wokha Town Wozhuro Eloe Cultural group.

Wokha Town Lakhuti Eloe group also presented a song of lamentation, which in olden days was sung by a bereaved wife to her deceased husband who had gone for Japan war and never returned. Besides, young models both male and female posed for photographs showcasing the different traditional and modern attires.    

Ihusingh, a team member from the WDD informed that the main objective of the tour was to document and publish the Naga attires in the form of a book, to promote Naga traditional attires for women upliftment besides giving Naga weavers an opportunity to earn incentives. It was also informed that the department has toured all the districts of Nagaland except for Dimapur, which they would be visiting very soon. Women folk both young and old came with colourful traditional and modern attires adding more colour to the event which was moderated by Grace Kikon.
