Women farmers learn use of modern and scientific technologies in livestock farming

Pfutsero, October 30 (MExN): An exposure tour of Phek district SHG women farmers was organized jointly by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Porba, Phek and Centre for Integral Development (CFID), Pfutsero.  

20 prospective women farmers from five villages (Pholami, Gidemi, Sakraba, Porba and Pfutsero) of Phek district participated in the tour held from October 24 to 28, informed a press release received here.  

Aimed at triggering the use of modern and scientific technologies in livestock farming, the farmers visited the ICAR-NRC on Pig, Guwahati and learned about different breeds of pigs and their scientific housing, feeding, breeding and other management practices.  

Dr. Gagan Bhuyan and Dr. Rajib Das, Technical Officers of the institute demonstrated on Artificial Insemination (AI) in pig and its prospects in the piggery enterprise. The farmers visited the state of art pork processing unit of the centre.  

Dr. Rajendran Thomas, Scientist (Livestock Products & Technology) explained the farmers on hygienic pork production, value addition and the entrepreneurial opportunities. The farmers also visited the livestock farms under ICAR (RC) NEHR–Barapani, Meghalaya and acquainted themselves of the scientific rearing practices of rabbit, pig, goat, cattle and buffalo.  

The farmers also visited the demonstration plots on integrated livestock production and interacted with the Technical Officers, wherein they learned about various aspects of integrated hill farming and the economic aspects. On their return to Nagaland, the farmers visited ICAR (RC) NEHR–Nagaland centre and observed the various livestock units.  

The team was led by Dr Debojyoti Borkotoky, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), KVK-Phek and Maya, Programme Assistant, CFID, a prominent NGO working for the economic and social uplift of women farmers. The linkage programme concluded with a positive note from the participating farmers to practice and disseminate the feasible technologies to enhance productivity and profitability in livestock farming, the release added.
