Dimapur | June 29
Neglected for decades by authorities and indifference shown by menfolk in the colony, three women- Ronika Miachieo, Againa and Atoli Swu have initiated clearing of drainage at Namgalong Colony, Dimapur near Fenesta Windows Showroom with assistance from Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) beginning Friday, June 29.
The drain running down through Nagarjan Junction affects residents of Police Colony, Bank Colony, Namgalong Colony and Walford area.
According to Ronika, a resident of Namgalong Colony, the drain in their locality has not been cleared for decades except in 2016 when it was cleared only two times which, however, did not help much to alleviate the artificial flood problem. She recalled that the drainage water was crystal clear many decades earlier when children in the locality used to catch fishes. However, with the passage of time owing to carelessness by the public in dumping every sort of waste into the drain compounded by encroachment over the drain contributed to the clogged drain. Today, viewed from the roadside, the drain does not look like one with tall grasses and plants having grown over the garbage completely covering the drain and it appears like a low-lying land.
The stretch of drain from Nagarjan Junction bridge till Walford Road near Fenesta Widows Showroom is around 700ft and artificial flood along that stretch becomes a routine during monsoon. Residents living downstream the Showroom face even bigger problem since the drain get narrower.
Noting the problem, the Clark Theological College, Mokokchung sponsored by ABAM has decided to donate 10ft land for drainage expansion in its 300ft plot stretching downstream. This was confirmed by Associate Pastor, DABA, Rev Lima who was also present at the drainage clearing site.
Ronika informed media persons that four hume pipes which remained clogged near the Showroom was half cleared on Friday. The drainage clearing exercise will continue on Saturday too.
Ronika along with two other women Againa and Atoli Swu have thanked the DMC Administrator, Moa Sangtam and his staff and traffic personnel for extending their support and cooperation. They made special mention of thanks to the DMC labourers for their efforts in clearing the stinking age-old garbage.
No financial help was received from any quarter to clear the drainage but the three women contributed amongst themselves to carry out the cleaning exercise. They have appealed the public not to throw solid wastes into the drain to prevent clogging.
