Women play an important role in implementing sanitation : NWHD

Dimapur, July 26 (MExN): Sanitation is the foundation for Health, Dignity and Development. Recognizing the importance to the overall achievement of the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs), the Naga Women Hoho of Dimapur organized a Total Sanitation Campaign for Women leaders. The campaign was sponsored by CCDU, PHED. 

A press release issued by the General Secretary of Naga Women Hoho, Dimapur stated that the key participants of TSC were women leaders from WATSAN Committee, Village Development Board and Women leaders from the church. It started at Dhansiripar village on July 13, at Diezephe area on July 14, Kuhoboto area on July 16 and the last campaign was held on July 24 at Niuland area under Dimapur District. Women leaders from 50 villages under Dimapur District attended the TSC program. Throughout the TSC programme Er. K.K Rengma gave detailed introduction of TSC and its goal. 

The note said that during the introduction he said the objective of Nagaland State TSC program is to make Nagaland a clean state by 2012. Every household in a village should feel a necessity to have a proper toilet which will ensure "No Smell, No See and No Touch" of human excreta.  

Further during the TSC program at Kohuboto village, Er. Mersen, Project Engineer, Rural Sector, PHED, Dimapur district highlighted the historical background of Sanitation programme and its objectives and approach in India. He sated it started very late in India. The Central Rural Sanitation Programme was launched in 1986. 

Moreover, resource person Adi Nakhro, M.A in Social Work who is a Consultant in PHED, Kohima highlighted the Seven Components of Sanitation. (1) Safe handling of drinking water (2) Safe disposal of liquid waste (3) Safe disposal of solid waste (4) Safe disposal of excreta. (5) Proper home sanitation (6) Personal Hygiene (7) Village Sanitation. She informed the participants the consequences of indiscriminate garbage disposal and the basic principles for solid waste management are the 3R: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. 

Resource person Imsubenla, M.A in Public Health, who is a Consultant in PHED, Kohima spoke on the “Importance of Sanitation for good community health”. She explained Excreta related diseases, water related diseases, Life cycle of round worm its infections and other health hazards caused due to chemical contamination. She also highlighted the preventive measures and steps that can be taken for good health, dignity and development, the note added.

Meanwhile, in regard to crime against women committed at Darogapathar, the Naga Women Hoho has appreciated "the Judiciary for delivering expeditious justice".

The Hoho stated in the note: “There are umpteen cases which goes unnoticed and which do not register as criminal case for the reason that they are nipped in the bud by the investigation agencies for love of money. Many a times the honorable court show undue leniency in granting bail to the heinous crime offenders and at times they do not look with the compassionate heart on the deserving accused who might not have committed the offence in granting them bail.”
