‘Women unaware of Legal rights as individual human’

Kohima, June 18 (MExN): The Changsao Thangjam Kohima organised a seminar on legal awareness programme on ‘Know your rights’ in coordination with Nagaland State Commission for Women in association with National Commission for Women, New Delhi at Chang Baptist Church Kohima on June 16 last.  

About 60 women attended the seminar. Introductory note, Asangla Cholong, Member, NSCW said that inspite of the seemingly progress made by women over the years, they may be unaware of their Legal rights as individual human beings and members of society which prevents them from fighting for their rights. The Commission came with the message that you are guaranteed protection against harassment and deprivation of your rights. Women have every right to seek redressal of grievances in terms of material compensation and punishment due to the offender, she said.  

Legal expert E. Thiba Phom, Advocate Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench spoke as resource person on the topic “Know your rights: Marriage Divorce & Inheritance, Domestic Violence Act, Crime Against Women (POSCO Act), Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Helpline (Child & Women), human trafficking and activities of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority and Consumer Rights. He remarked that such seminar is very essential and it will have better outcome if the men folk are also included in such seminars.  

The programme was moderated by Senti Chang while Anungla Chang, Pastor, CBLK pronounced invocation prayer.
