‘Work together for healthier, greener earth’

The Department of Geology, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema in partnership with Social Forestry Division, Department of Forest, Environment & Climate Change Nagaland today observed Earth Day 2023 under the theme “Invest in our planet’ at NU, Kohima Campus, Meriema.

400 saplings, provided by the forest department were planted in and around the campus to mark the occasion.
In his address, Enyiwekha Wezah, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Department of Forest, Environment & Climate Change Nagaland said, “We want everything best in life, but if the planet earth is not safe from catastrophe all our efforts are in vain.”

There is an urgent need to address climate change, global warming, melting ice which are the ailment of our earth, he said adding that we cannot keep blaming the industrialists for the damage done to the earth if we don’t do our part.
He called upon the people to work together for healthier and greener earth.

He suggested tips for behavioural change such as using handkerchief instead of tissue papers, using reusable cups and plates and discouraging use & throw ones, turning off lights when not in use, sharing transport to save fossil fuel, turning off water taps when not in use, shutting down computers when not in use to save energy, use of carry bags/reusable bags while marketing, and above all planting more trees.

 “If we have not started doing these things, let us start doing it from today,” Wezah encouraged.

Prof G.T. Thong, Pro-Vice Chancellor of NU Kohima Campus, Meriema also delivered a short speech.

The programme was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Temsulemba Walling while Professor B. V. Rao, Head of Geology Department proposed vote of thanks.
