Dimapur, March 7 (MExN): Three-day workshop on ‘digital libraries: open source software for digital repositories’ will be conducted from March 8 to 10 at ICFAI University Nagaland, Dimapur.
Sponsored by Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF), the workshop will highlight the application of Open Source Software (OSS) in libraries and provide hands-on training to the library and information science professionals of the North East states of India.
The resource persons include: Prof ARD Prasad, Head DRTC, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore; Prof Devika P. Madalli, professor DRTC, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore; Dr FR Sumer, Deputy Librarian, NEHU, Shillong; and Alovi Zhimomi, Assistant Professor, Department of LIS, ICFAI University Nagaland.
The objectives of the workshop are to equip the participants with knowledge of the software DSPACE; to exchange appropriate skills, information and experience on DSPACE; to update professionals and academic community about content management; to develop an expertise by providing a thorough training, tutorial, demonstration and hands-on practice on Open Source Software (OSS) and their applications in libraries.
Open Source Software has taken the computing world by storm, a press release received here stated, adding its contribution to every scientific field is enormous and library and information science field is no exception. “In fact, in many a case Open Source Software (OSS) has been found more effective than the commercial equivalents.”
The purpose of the three-day workshop is to impart practical knowledge to participants on the use of open source tools in libraries.
The open source software DSPACE that deals with institutional repositories will be introduced and taught with hands-on practice. The workshop will also include lectures by experts to widen the knowledge in related topics of digital libraries and tools to build and manage content for self archiving.
It will look at strengthening libraries in North East India through capacity building, in cutting edge areas of building institutional repositories.
This training is limited to 20 participants who should be Library & Information Science qualified professionals, either working in libraries or teaching Library & Information Science, in the North East states of India.
