Mokokchung: An orientation programme for butchers of Mokokchung was organized by the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI) at the latter’s office conference hall which was also attended by officials from the veterinary department as well as the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC).
Dr. Aoyimsen Jamir, one of the resource persons, spoke on the topic ‘Management of slaughter houses, meat marketing patterns and pricing’ while Dr. Rongsen Longkumer spoke on the topic ‘Hygenic slaughtering practices’. District Veterinary Officer, Mokokchung, Dr. Mapu also delivered a brief speech wherein he challenged the butchers to meet customers’ satisfaction while stressing on hygiene and cleanliness. He also said that Mokokchung needed a proper abattoir and suggested the MCCI and the MMC could take up the proposal with the government while also saying that the department was ready to extend assistance for the same.
A lively interactive session was also held during the course of the programme wherein the butchers raised several pertinent issues facing them in the market. The butchers strongly questioned the role of Quarantine Check Posts manned by the Veterinary Department as, according to them, these ‘temporary’ Quarantine Check Posts were not serving the real purpose of their existence. They stated that Quarantine Check Posts as of now were merely serving as ‘tax collection gate’. The butchers also acknowledged the immediate need for at least a small scale abattoir in Mokokchung. The butchers also agreed to adhere to the directives issued by the MMC in 2013 with regard to clean and hygienic management of their stalls.
The proceedings of the programme was conducted by Moasangba Jamir, president of MCCI.
