Workshop held for ‘survivors of sexual violence’ in Kohima

Kohima, October 31 (MExN): A state-level workshop on ‘Medico-Legal Care for Survivors of Sexual Violence’ was organized by the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW)-Women Helpline (WHL) 181 Nagaland, Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB), in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Kohima on October 29.


SRCW Nagaland in a press release stated the workshop was moderated by Gracy Ayee, State Coordinator, SRCW. Bano Vinito, Chairperson, NSSWB stressed on the need for convergence of the line departments to reach out to the target group, in this case, the survivors of sexual violence.


Dr Atoshe Sema, Additional Director, NHP and State Program Officer RCH, H&FW spoke on Strengthening Convergence with the Health Sector. He emphasized on the fact that departments cannot work in isolation when it comes to helping the survivors of sexual violence, and that more of such workshops should be conducted in the future as well. 


Resource persons in the technical session were Meneno V, Research Officer, SRCW; Gracy Ayee, State Coordinator, SRCW; Dr S Manyau Phom, Deputy Director, NHM; Vitsino Iralu, Legal Consultant, WH Land; Lanurenla Imchen Helpline Manager, WHL. 


In the technical session, the following topics were included: Introduction of Schemes for Protection of Women, namely – the Women Helpline-181, Sakhi-One Stop Centre, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and the Mahila Shakti Kendra; Introduction of Sexual Violence and Psycho Social Care for Survivors; Health Consequences and Comprehensive Health Care Response and Medico Legal Examination for Survivors; Legal Obligations, Medical Examination and Reporting; Guiding Principles for Responding to Groups: Interfacing with other Agencies to give Integrated Services to Survivors of Sexual Violence.


The workshop was attended by medical officers, GNM, and functionaries of the Sakhi-OSCs from the districts. The interactive session saw sharing of experiences from the group and brought about fruitful discussions on the various issues related to Medico-Legal care for survivors of sexual violence in the State. 


Subsequently, on October 30, the SRCW-Women Helpline-181, under the NSSWB organized another workshop at the NSSWB Conference Hall for the functionaries of the Sakhi-One Stop Centres on Legal Mechanisms to Handle Gender-Based Violence.
