Workshop on ‘Writing for Therapy’ held at MGM College

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 5 (MExN): The Department of English, MGM College, organised a one-day Creative Writing Workshop on October 4 on the theme “Writing for Therapy.” The workshop aimed to introduce students to the therapeutic dimensions of creative writing and its role as a medium for emotional healing, self-discovery, and mental well-being.

The resource person for the session was Otoli V. Yeptho, a noted educator and academician, whose expertise and empathetic approach engaged the participants throughout the programme. Her session effectively combined theoretical concepts with practical exercises, creating a safe and stimulating space for students to explore their creativity.

The workshop covered key aspects of expressive writing, including an introduction to the origins and psychological benefits of writing to manage stress, trauma, and complex emotions. Participants engaged in guided exercises such as journaling, unsent letter writing, and crafting narratives drawn from personal experiences. They also explored the use of figurative language and metaphor to externalize emotions through techniques like “Mind Dump Writing.”

Students actively participated in worksheet-based activities, including Haiku and Limerick composition. Toward the end of the session, each participant received a reflective writing sheet to compose a personal letter to themselves, an exercise designed to deepen self-awareness and emotional clarity.

Participants described the workshop as “refreshing,” “enlightening,” and “emotionally empowering.” The event received overwhelmingly positive feedback for broadening perspectives on writing beyond academics.

The Department of English stated that the workshop not only achieved its objective of highlighting the holistic benefits of creative expression but also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovative and student-centered learning experiences at MGM College.
