Farmers and entrepreneurs taking part in the processing of Mithun hide during the hands on training session.
Dimapur, March 4 (MExN): Presently in Nagaland, most of the skin of animals is consumed along with meat and this leads to the loss of very valuable product leather, as skin does not have any nutritive value. The majority of local inhabitant is non-vegetarian in their food habit, so hundreds of animals are slaughtered per day. However, due to unawareness about the techniques of hide/skin processing people are not able to process.
Keeping this in view, these facts National Research Center on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland in collaboration with Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology, Salt lake, Kolkata, West Bengal organized three days workshop cum training from February 28 to March 2 on Mithun hide processing.
Farmers and entrepreneurs from different parts of Nagaland attended the workshop cum training programme. This provided a platform for exchanging ideas and at the same time, people got opportunity to do the processing during the hands on training session.
The objective of the programme was to create awareness among the local populace about alternative and better utilization of animal hide/skin. During the valedictory session Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa, Director, National Research Center on Mithun encouraged the participant to utilize the opportunity at hand and assured all the possible technological support in this endeavor.
It will be pertinent to mention here that recently, the State has constructed semi automated slaughter house at Dimapur with an installed capacity of slaughtering and processing about 1000 units of livestock per day and this unit may supply the needed raw material for the leather processing unit.
