World AIDS Day 2025 was observed on December 1 at the Conference Hall of District Hospital Zunheboto under the theme “Overcoming Disparities, Transforming the AIDS Response.”

The theme speaker, Dr Kitokali, Medical Officer, ART, DH Zunheboto, said that HIV is no longer a terminal disease and that people living with HIV can live long, productive lives and contribute to society.
Kitokali emphasised that “a kind word and a non-judgmental attitude can heal more deeply than medicine alone,” and further stressed the need for integration of HIV and mental health programmes to create a stigma-free environment.

She urged everyone to be the voice for those who are afraid to speak, affirming that together people can overcome discrimination and move towards a better future.

Kalito, President of NZP+, said that although HIV and AIDS are not curable, regular and timely medication is essential to prevent sickness and maintain good health. Kalito noted that in today’s generation, HIV and AIDS are common not only because of sexual transmission but also due to hereditary factors, adding that people should not judge or look down on those living with HIV.

She expressed concern that many clients hide their status because of stigma, while reminding that stopping medication leads to serious health issues, as the medicine becomes ineffective when not taken regularly.

She further clarified that HIV is not transmitted through normal socializing, urging people not to fear casual contact.

Dr Phyolluno Lotha, Medical Superintendent and District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) Zunheboto graced the even as the special guest. In his address, Lotha stated that HIV is preventable with proper knowledge, early treatment, and understanding, adding that “people living with HIV can lead normal lives.”

Lotha underlined the need for every individual to come together in spreading awareness, promoting dignity, and standing in support of those who are suffering from HIV.

The programme was attended by representatives of Zunheboto Area Public Organisations, Zunheboto Area GB Association, students from Government Higher Secondary School and Government College, members of the Zunheboto Range Students’ Union, and citizens of Zunheboto.

Earlier, the invocation was led by Kivika T Yeptho, Chaplain, DH Zunheboto. A special number was presented by Akavi Yeptho, PMTD Supervisor, NTEP Zunheboto, and the programme concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Pitoka, PM SCS Zunheboto.
