Dimapur, April 20 (MExN): With the objective of promoting and spreading awareness on reading, copyright issues and publishing, St Joseph University, Nagaland observed ‘World Book Day’ under the theme ‘retelling traditions through books’ on April 20.

A press release received here stated that speaking at the occasion, Dr Moalemba Jamir, Associate Editor, The Morung Express, who attended the programme as special invitee, highlighted the importance of oral memory harvesting, especially in the context of Naga society.

Stressing on the importance of research, Jamir asserted how the sources should be multiple and verifiable. He also talked about ‘parallel narratives’ which should be oriented towards inter-generational collaboration and encourage the students and researchers to make an in-depth inquiry on the roots of one's own cultural history. Moreover, he was critical of looking at one’s own history and culture from the perspectives of foreign academicians or writers.

Drawing light on the narratives of writings by taking into account the works of Dr Temsula Ao, Dr Easterine Kire, Dr Dolly Kikon and others, he pointed out the crucial role of women writers in retelling the traditions in a patriarchal society.

During the programme, a book titled ‘Sustainable Environment, Manifestation and Augmentation’ was jointly released by Dr Moalemba Jamir and Professor Fr Sunny Joseph, Department of Education, SJU Nagaland.

In the second session, around 25 students took part in the costume and art-work competitions. Altogether, 100 people attended the programme.
