World Consumer Rights Day celebrated

CHUMUKEDIMA, March 15 (MExN): World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated today at Mount Mary College (MMC), Chumukedima. It was organized jointly by the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Dimapur, and Consumer Club of MMC. Runavilhuo Kin, President of Chakro Public Organisation Chumukedima Circle, was the guest of honour, stated a press release from Limatoshi Jamir, Assistant Controller, LM&CP, Dimapur.

In a keynote address, Assistant Controller, LM&CP, narrated the history of World Consumer Rights Day and explained the importance of observing the day. Mentioning that this day is observed in commemoration of the historic speech delivered to the US Congress by President John F Kennedy on March 15, 1962, Jamir made known the four rights that President Kennedy assured the American consumers: Right to safety, Right to choose, Right to information, and, Right to be heard.

On this foundation, the World Consumer Rights Day was first observed on March 15, 1983, and ever since has been observed every year to promote the basic rights of consumers. Jamir also explained how the department of LM&CP has been the nodal department of consumer protection in the state. Jamir stated that he had chosen MMC and organized the program jointly with the Consumer Club of MMC with a vision to impart knowledge about consumer rights to young people.

The guest of honour exhorting the gathering acknowledged the LM&CP department and further expressed that it was a great honour for the college and public of Chumukedima.
Earlier, Onentemjen Ao, Vice Principal, MMC, gave the welcome speech. Other highlights of the program were speeches from three students of MMC on consumer rights, and a special number from a student.

Kohima: Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Kohima district along with Consumer Clubs celebrated World Consumer Rights Day on March 15 at Phesama. The program was chaired by Apeno Khale, Coordinator of Consumer Club, St. Paul School Phesama while the invocation was pronounced by Rev. Fr. Felix, principal, St. Paul School.

Kezhokhoto Savi, advocate and president of Nagaland Voluntary Consumer Organisation, was the resource person. According to a press release, he spoke on the importance of ‘Consumer Rights in the Digital Age.” He highlighted the importance of Consumer Protection Act 1986 (COPRA), “which in today’s world is the guardian of every consumer from large corporations and unscrupulous business from taking undue advantage of the consumers.” He also stressed on the importance of already framed guidelines by the United Nations for consumer protection.

Tuensang: In Tuensang, the World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated at CKS conference hall under the theme ‘Consumers’ rights in the digital age’ organized by the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection in collaboration with consumers organizations and consumers clubs. The programme was attended by students of various schools like St John’s Hr Secondary, St Xavier School, Government Higher Secondary School, Tuensang, Baptist Thangnyen School. The resource persons were Imsu Sangla, Advocate and Antimangyang, Advocate. They both commented on the awareness of legal rights and Consumer Protection Act. (DIPR)
