World Consumer Rights Day was observed in Tuensang and Zunheboto on March 15 under the theme ‘Safe Products, Confident Consumers,’ with programmes organised by the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection.

In Tuensang, the programme was held at the LMCP Office and organised by the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Tuensang. The session was chaired by Loleensangla, LDA, LMCP.

Delivering the welcome and keynote address, Lemtimong, LDA, LMCP, highlighted the importance of consumer awareness and the need for consumers to understand their rights while purchasing goods and services. He stated that informed consumers play a key role in ensuring fairness in the marketplace.

Speaking on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” C Chullen Chang, Assistant Controller, LM&CP Tuensang, said that consumer safety begins with awareness and vigilance. He encouraged the public to check proper labeling, expiry dates and standard weights while purchasing products and added that consumers should not hesitate to report unfair trade practices or misleading information.

The programme concluded with a discussion and closing remarks by Yemjong BN Chang, Senior Inspector, LMCP Tuensang, who called for greater public cooperation in promoting responsible trade practices. He stated that protecting consumer rights requires joint effort from both authorities and the public to ensure transparency and accountability in the market.

Meanwhile, in Zunheboto, the day was observed at the office premises of the Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Zunheboto. The programme was organised by the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection in collaboration with the Consumer Rights Organization Zunheboto and the Zunheboto Range Students’ Union (ZRSU).

During the programme, Pitoka Achumi, President, Consumer Rights Organization Zunheboto, delivered a speech on consumer rights and extended greetings to the gathering, highlighting the importance of consumer awareness and responsible purchasing.

Tonoka V Zhimomi, General Secretary, ZRSU, in his address encouraged young people and students to be aware of their rights as consumers and to actively support initiatives that promote fair trade practices.

Inspector of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Zunheboto, Er Pukhai L Swu delivered a presentation on the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011. The session focused on ensuring accurate weights and measures in trade and the role of the department in enforcing regulations to protect consumers from unfair practices.

Officials speaking at the programme highlighted the importance of consumer awareness in ensuring transparency and accountability in the marketplace. Citizens were encouraged to remain vigilant while purchasing goods and services and to report any unfair trade practices or violations of consumer rights.

Representatives from collaborating organisations, students and members of the public attended the event.
