World Day for Grandparents and Elderly observed across Nagaland

The fifth World Day for Grandparents and Elderly was observed across various parishes, centres, and churches in Nagaland on July 27.

Chümoukedima, July 28 (MExN): The fifth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was observed across various parishes, centres, and churches in Nagaland on July 27, the fourth Sunday of the month, in conjunction with the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.

This year’s observance followed the theme chosen by Holy Father Late Pope Francis: “Blessed are those who have not lost Hope.” (Sirach 14:2). The theme emphasized the role of hope in old age and the importance of strengthening intergenerational bonds through mutual love and support.

In a press release issued by the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM), it stated that the day was marked by honouring and appreciating grandparents and the elderly “for their wisdom, love and immeasurable contributions to the mother church and their loving families.”

The NCYM hosted a special celebration at the Priests Home in Chümoukedima with nine elderly priests of the Diocese of Kohima, described as “the pioneers who worked in remotest areas in spreading the Good News of Christ.”

The highlight of the programme was a Holy Eucharistic celebration, with the most senior priest in the Diocese, Fr. OC Abraham, serving as the main celebrant. The celebration concluded with a felicitation programme organised by the NCYM in honour of the elderly clergy.

Veronica Nriame, General Secretary of NCYM, issued the statement on behalf of the organization.
