‘Rampant drug abuse taking place in form of self prescription of drugs’
Along with the rest of the world, the department of Health and Family Welfare, Zunheboto observed the World Health Day today, April 7, 2011 based on the theme “Combat Drug Resistance; no action today, no cure tomorrow”. A brief formal function was conducted at the CMO’s Office Chamber which was attended by all the staff of CMO’s establishment, RNTCP, NVDCP, NLEP and NRHM. A press note issued by P. Renthungo Odyuo, district media officer, Zunheboto informed that the function was chaired by the Deputy CMO, Dr. Hokishe Sema, who also delivered the keynote address.
In his address, Dr. Hokishe Sema highlighted the significance of the day and exhorted the participants about the fact that there is rampant drug abuse taking place in the form of self prescription of drugs without proper medical guidance and the potential dangerous fallouts this practice posed to health as one might develop a resistance to that particular drug over a period of time. Pointing out another dangerous practice widely practiced by patients, non completion of prescribed medication course once one develops signs of recovery from an illness poses an equally serious health hazard and such practices needs to be stopped. He also stressed upon the fact that since the Department was the nodal agency in delivering health care, it had a leading role to play in spreading awareness to curb these hazardous practices. Others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. Kheokhu, DTO and Avikali Jakhalu, DPM.
