Longleng, July 11 (MExN): The District Health Society, Longleng observed the World Population Day and launching of population fortnight at CMO conference hall, Longleng with Dharam Raj, IAS Deputy Commissioner Longleng as special guest.
A press release by Media Officer CMO office stated that during the programme, Dr Imotemsu Medical Superintendent, DH Longleng gave the welcome address.
Dr Imnameren Phom DPO (RCH/UIP) in the keynote address reiterated the importance of observing the day. He added that the day was to create awareness on how to manage a family and sensitise the people about the issue of the global population and importance of reproductive health.
He urged the health workers and the attendees to encourage eligible couples to keep adequate spacing between two children for the health of the mother and child, discourage teenage pregnancy until she attain the age of 20 years and unplanned pregnancy.
He further stated that the world population fortnight will start from July 11 to 24 and the activities such as free services like sterilization, IUCD and distribution of IEC materials will be carried out at all Health Units across the district.
The DC Longleng Dharam Raj, IAS in his speech emphasised on birth spacing regarding family planning and gender equality. He shared on the benefits and suggested measures to improve family planning in rural areas, his concern on lack of male involvement in the family planning causing much health complications to both mother and child.
The DC reminded on the rising global population concerns and cited issues related to over population in our country. He urged all health providers and frontline workers to create awareness and educate the public at the village level on family planning. He concluded by reminding the attendees that family planning is not only about contraceptives but planning for the present and future.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by A Nyumoi Phom, consultant NVBDCP and short speech were delivered by Dr Tiasunep CMO Longleng and President, Phomla Hoichem, followed by District Level Orientation and Review meeting on RMNCAH+N.
