‘World Pulses Day’ observed in Phek

Phek, February 10 (MExN): The KVK Phek, ICAR-NRCM observed ‘World Pulses Day’ at the KVK Training Hall, Porba on February 10. 

In the welcome address, Dr T Esther Longkumer, Senior Scientist & Head In charge, KVK Phek created awareness about the nutritional benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production with the aim of enhancing food security and nutrition. 

The programme was followed by technical session. A presentation based on this year’s theme ‘Pulses to empower youth in achieving sustainable agri-food systems’’ was presented by Dr Hannah K Asangla, ACTO Agronomy. She encouraged the youths to act as a bridge between traditional farming techniques and new technologies, to make agriculture more sustainable and nutrition-sensitive. 

Keniseto Chucha, Farm manager spoke on the importance of pulses for food and nutritional security, he elaborated on nutritional aspects, food security and environmental benefits of pulses which contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing dependence on the synthetic fertilizers. 

The programme was followed by an exhibition showcasing the modern technologies for sustainable farming at the premises. Kisan Gosthi was also conducted by creating awareness on the importance of pulses and to include pulses in cropping systems and crop diversification for sustainable farming.

A farmer scientist interaction was followed, wherein the farmers actively participated. Altogether, the programme was attended by 85 participants. This was stated in a press release issued by KVK Phek, ICAR-NRCM.
