Kohima, December 5 (MExN): The Department of Soil and Water Conservation observed the World Soil Day on December 5 at the Directorate conference hall to re-affirm its focussed attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate sustainable management of soil resources.
K. Khekiho Shohe, Jt. Director, Directorate of Soil & Water Conservation in a press release stated that the day was formally observed as a part of global awareness raising platform for sustainable development and reducing green house gas emission. It was observed to celebrate the importance of soil as one of the critical components of natural system and as a vital contributor to human being and other living beings.
Viliehu Nguzhü, Director, Department of Soil and Water Conservation in his short speech deliberated on how the observation of World Soil Day came into being with the initiative of International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and value of Soil and the role of the department in its protection and preservation.
Speaking on the theme of the day ‘Greening the Blue,’ Zhekheto Awomi, Addl. Director, reminded the gathering on the essence of soil not just for the agricultural sector but for the entire civilisation. He also spoke on the imminent threat posed to the humanity due to soil & water pollution resulting in food insecurity and global climate change. In conclusion, he also encouraged the officers and staff being from the responsible department to be the solution to the soil pollution.
The programme was chaired by Khekiho Shohe, Joint Director and vote of thanks was proposed by Rongsenlemzung, Deputy Director.
