WSSA Zuikhu Memorial Trophy Gold Cup concludes

NIULAND, MARCH 1 (MExN): The closing ceremony of the Silver Jubilee edition of the Western Sumi Sports Association (WSSA) Zuikhu Memorial Trophy Gold Cup was held on February 29 with Indian football legend and Arjuna awardee, Baichung Bhutia as the star guest and Advisor for Industries and Commerce, Hekani Jakhalu as guest of honor.

Hekani Jakhalu, in her speech said the need of the hour today was “unity” in every aspects to develop the western Sumi region and highlighted that sports was an excellent platform to develop leadership skills at the grass root level. She emphasized that the key to achieve any target was “focus“ while citing instance that during a football match all are focused to hit the goal within the goal post through team work and within a time frame. If there is lack of focus in the match nothing can be achieved or won, she maintained. 

Hekani further stated that WSSA has to move ahead with a new vision and blueprint plan and prepare for the golden jubilee, focusing on creating the right infrastructure ecosystem for the upcoming western Sumi generation, so they get appropriate platform and opportunity to reach national and international standards.

The Advisor also assured that with consultation and coordination with other Sumi legislators in western Sumi areas, she would make all efforts towards building a correct ecosystem to promote sports in the region. 

Baichung Bhutia, who is also an advisor to WSSA stated that after taking over as the mantle, his first effort was to train 15 coaches under WSSA banner in Siliguri under his club , as coach training was crucial to identify young talents and guidance of the right technique was basic necessity.

Bhutia also encouraged that more tournaments especially under-16 age group should be organised at the grass root level and encouraged by community leaders. He further assured complete support to WSSA in future while pointing out that Sumis have inherent skills which need to be nurtured to enter the professional levels. 

The closing ceremony was marked with a penalty shoot-out match between WSSA led by Baichung Bhutia as captain and guest of honour team. Earlier, a plot of land donated at Kuhoxu village towards development of future WSSA sports centre under Niuland district was also inaugurated.
