Dimapur, October 2 (MExN): The Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has written to the Nagaland Chief Minister demanding immediate construction of the Niuland bridge/culvert under the Chief Minister’s Road Development Fund (CMRDF).
A press note from the WSSU informed that in addition to the collapse of the steel girder bridge over the Chathe River, now the culvert at Balijan Stream near Vikhokhu village has also been washed away. The people from Niuland area now have to take the Rengmapani to Bokajan (Assam) route, which takes more than 4 hours, the WSSU informed.
The WSSU lamented that “despite having departments like the PWD (R&B), Disaster Management with additional back up of CMRDF of Rs 15 Crore reserved for the state under the CM to address such emergent situations, no tangible and effective steps are being taken by the state government so far.”
It meanwhile pointed to the danger to lives of people living at the vicinity of ‘Noune Resort’ at New Showba which “has a private dam, huge volume of water stocked, capable of washing away any bridge or submerge villages, if it accidentally collapses.” In this regard, the WSSU urged the government to immediately check and ensure safety measures and let the public know if the private dam is safe for people living below the dam’s water level.
