WTC clears waste along NH-2 in Wokha

Dimapur, March 16 (MExN): The Wokha Town Council (WTC) cleared accumulated waste near the First Cry Shop along NH-2 in Wokha town following waterlogging caused by an overflowing drainage system.

A press release from WTC Chairperson W Myingthungo Kikon informed that the council undertook the initiative as part of efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene in the town. The area had experienced persistent waterlogging and waste overflow, which the council said had been aggravated by improper waste disposal by local residents.

The council observed that the situation was “a man-made catastrophe resulting from the non-compliance of residents who have been dumping waste along the drainage systems.”

WTC urged community members to help maintain cleanliness in the town and to report any instances of waste being dumped into drainage systems.

The council also raised concerns about the condition of the drainage infrastructure along the highway. It stated that the drainage system constructed by the concerned contractors does not meet the necessary standards, resulting in frequent waterlogging and overflow of stormwater drains during the monsoon season.

According to the council, the recurring problem poses risks to public health and safety, disrupts daily activities, and can damage local infrastructure.

With the monsoon season approaching, WTC has urged the Department of National Highways to take prompt action to address the issue. It requested the department to engage qualified experts to assess the current condition of the drainage system and identify locations requiring urgent attention.

The council stated that timely intervention would be essential to improve the effectiveness of the drainage system and ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Wokha during the upcoming monsoon.
