YAA and TSU temporarily suspend ultimatum on Reservation Policy

Kohima, December 2 (MExN): The Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA) and Tikhir Students' Union (TSU) have temporarily deferred their ultimatum to the Nagaland government, initially submitted to the Chief Secretary on November 25. The ultimatum addressed the alleged inaction of the government in implementing its Notification dated March 23, 2022, and adhering to the Guwahati High Court (Kohima Bench) judgment order issued on September 29, 2023, regarding the 25% BT Quota reservation.

The suspension of the ultimatum follows an appeal by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) and Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC), urging the student bodies to allow efforts for a resolution through government dialogue. The appeal emphasized prioritizing the shared interests of the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes while fostering unity during this festive period.

In their statement, the YAA and TSU underscored that the 25% reservation policy aims to uplift educationally, socially, and economically disadvantaged communities. They accused the government of deliberately neglecting its obligations, which they claimed undermines the rights of the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes. The student bodies warned of potential action if the reservation policy is not implemented in full, describing any delay as a betrayal of social justice and equality principles.

“The government must immediately act on its March 2022 notification and strictly comply with the court's directive without further delay,” the statement read.

Expressing gratitude to their supporters, the YAA and TSU appealed for continued optimism and vigilance, urging all members of their communities to stay prepared for potential future actions if required.

The two student bodies reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing justice through all available means, reiterating their demand for the government to act decisively to ensure equitable implementation of the reservation policy.
