Dimapur, November 25 (MExN): The Yimkhiung Akheru Arihako (YAA) and Tikhir Students’ Union (TSU) have issued a five-day ultimatum to the State Government to expedite implementation of the 25% jobs reservation for seven tribes and six districts of Eastern Nagaland.
The apex students’ organisations of the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes stated that the State Government has failed to implement the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (P&AR) notification dated March 23, 2022, as well as the verdict of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, dated September 29, 2023, regarding the matter.
In a press release, the two organisations noted that several joint representations to the State Government to expedite the implementation of the 25% reservation, in line with the March notification and the court’s verdict, have gone unaddressed.
The State Government’s inaction has severely impacted aspirants and citizens, denying them their fundamental rights, they stated.
Accordingly, the YAA and TSU declared that their rights "can and will not be compromised" and have given the State Government until November 30 to undertake corrective measures.
If their genuine demand is not addressed, the YAA and TSU warned that they would be compelled to resort to indefinite democratic agitation and abstain from all State events. They also cautioned that the State Government would bear full responsibility for any untoward incidents arising during the course of the agitation.
Among other provisions, the March 23, 2022 notification specified that 25% of all categories of posts, both gazetted and non-gazetted, under the Government of Nagaland, shall be reserved for persons belonging to seven tribes from the six districts of Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Longleng, Noklak, and Shamator, with immediate effect.
The tribes are Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Yimkhiung, Chang, Khiamniungan, and Tikhir, and the reservation is provided under the “educationally and economically backward tribe” category. The notification followed the recognition of the Tikhir tribe as a separate tribe of Nagaland on January 20, 2022.
