Longleng district administration officials informed that the incident in Yonglok village involving the Assam Police has been resolved. According to official inputs, officials from both sides of the inter-state border met on June 10 to discuss and resolve the issue.

Border Magistrate (BM) of Namsang, Nukshimatong told The Morung Express today that the incident was the effect of Assam Police personnel forcefully dismantling a temporary barricade set up by Yonglok villagers on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The village, which is near the border with Assam, is located about 1-2km from Ladaigarh— a place disputed by both states.

“On June 8, the Border Magistrate (of Nazira) came with the (Assam) Police and they destroyed a COVID-19 checkgate at Yonglok,” said Nukshimatong, who is also EAC, Tamlu, while adding that the place where the barricade was set up does not fall in Assam.

He added that the villagers built a hut and a rudimentary barricade as a precautionary measure since Nagaland is in lockdown restricting unauthorised movement of people. After destroying the barricade, the Assam Police personnel also set up a bunker nearby.

“So, on June 10, we the Longleng district administration and police went there to dismantle the bunker,” he said, adding, “though it was first dismantled by the CRPF in the morning” the team further removed other structures in the vicinity. It included an illegal tea plantation and fencing allegedly established by people from Assam.

It culminated with him holding a meeting at the same place with his Assam counterpart wherein, he said the issue was discussed and “resolved amicably.”  “We resolved that we will maintain the status quo since the Assam-Nagaland border dispute is in the Supreme Court (pending judgment) and no one will do any activity in the disputed area.”
