A 25-year-old male is presumed dead after reportedly being swept away by strong currents in a stream below Lower AG, Kohima, on June 27.
Despite rescue operations commencing today by a joint team comprising the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kohima, volunteers, and family members, the victim's body has not yet been recovered at the time of filing this report.
Additional SP and PRO Relo T Aye, citing the victim's companion and the primary witness, informed that the duo had visited the stream area below Lower AG for a picnic around 11 am.
During heavy rainfall, they sought shelter and spotted a hut across the stream. While attempting to cross, the victim was swept away by the current.
The PRO added that another witness, described as an elder, reported seeing the individual being swept away by the stream.
The victim is said to be a resident of Kohima and a student of Government Polytechnic College, Atoizu.
Meanwhile, addressing a WhatsApp voice note mentioning two drowning, the police clarified that only one person was swept away. They also noted that the family filed a report only late-night yesterday at South Police Station, Kohima.
Regarding the ongoing rescue operation, a DDMA official reported that as of this evening, the team had searched extensively from the picnic area upstream and downstream along the stream. The search would continue tomorrow if the body is not found.
Since the incident occurred on Thursday, the police are also considering the possibility of the body being washed downstream.
"Concerned authorities in Zunheboto, Wokha, and Phek districts, particularly Chozüba and Pughoboto police, have been informed about the incident," the police added.
