A week long youth festival cum Sükrünye in commemoration with Chakhesang Day commenced here this morning under the aegis of Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) with the theme “Tapping the feats.”
Gracing the inaugural ceremony, Minister for Home Küzholuzo (Azo) Nienu extended Sükrünye greetings to the Chakhesang community. Azo said many felt that culture is only to do with wearing colourful traditional dresses, dancing, singing and feasting but the fundamental part of our culture is hard working and honesty.
In this, he called upon the people uphold the good traditional values of forefathers. He also stressed on the need to do away with certain type of culture which are detrimental to the present society and further challenged the people to revive the culture in a Christian manner and live in a Christian manner.
The minister welcomed new DC and SP to the Phek district HQ. Stating that for a long period of time, the people never had IAS and IPS officers serving in the district, he requested the Phek Area Public Organization, Phek Area Youth Organization, Phek Town Youth Society and the general public to extend their fullest cooperation to them in running the state of affairs of the district.
The minister was optimistic that under their administration the Phek district will see changes in the near future. Stating that he have always dream of turning Phek town into role model town, Azo sought their helping hand in changing the face of the district. The minister said in the chain of events, while going through different societies, states and countries, he have seen changes being made with discipline. “When a human being is disciplined, when a society is being disciplined, changes and development comes,” he said. Azo requested DC and SP to atleast discipline the people so that through discipline “we can build a better district HQ,” and thereby becomes role model for state as a whole.
Meanwhile, the minister thanked the different civil societies for giving pressure to the Government of India for solution before elections. “You have our (State Government) support,” he said. In the event of elections take place; he challenged the people to support Clean Election campaign initiated by Nagaland Baptist Church Council.
Stressing on the need to appreciate one another, he said “Let us give room and space for appreciation.”
Stating that NPF have already reconciled, he said “We will come back to power.” Earlier, PTYS president Neizote Venuh delivered welcome address. He said the youth festival aims to promote rural and cultural tourism, which will go on till January 15. The inaugural ceremony was chaired by Kozote Akami. Day two event will be graced by Phek town council former chairperson Kupota Khesoh and 19th Phek A/C NPF president Api Vadeo as hosts.
The week- long festival will be marked by various competitions; bamboo pole race, bamboo push, arrow shooting with clay ball, grass pelting, log cutting, Ewona Cukowi, bamboo stilt race, cart race, bow shooting, trumpet blowing, long jump, spear throw, sack rally race, quarter indigenous, fusion song, Sükrünye marathon, spot jump, Udothi, cock fight, catapult shooting with clay ball, belt wrestling, tug of war, top fight, traditional fire making and cooking Sükrünye special, etc etc.
