Auto driver’s killer a Class IX student
The main accused in Sunday’s killing wherein Danny Achumi, a part time auto driver and also a tax collector for DADU, was hacked to death at Padumpukhuri B’, was arrested by the Dimapur Police on June 13. He was later identified as Tovi Chishi of Tolovi village, a class IX student in Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.
On the fateful night, Tovi and two of his friends came and asked Hubibur Rahman and his brother Bulbul Rahman, auto-rickshaw drivers, if they wanted to hire an auto to Tulovi village. Noticing the inebriated condition of Tovi and his friends, they refused to take them as passengers.
The deceased, Danny Achumi, then volunteered to take the three youngsters to Tulovi on the same auto. The passengers hauled in two more friends from the taxi stand before heading on their way to Tulovi. Hubibur accompanied Danny by sharing the driver’s seat, Police sources said.
While on the way, Tovi told his friends that he was going to kill the driver. His friends, who initially thought he was jesting, were in for a ghastly surprise.
After reaching Tulovi village, Tovi asked for the auto to wait for some minutes, giving the reason that he had to fetch the fare from home. After 10 to 20 minutes, Tovi emerged with a friend named Imliakum.
They had in their possession 3 Naga Daos. Danny was then told to take them back to Dimapur.
While on the way back, Tovi asked the auto driver to take an alternative route. When they reached a secluded place, Tovi ordered the driver to stop, according to Police. The moment Danny stopped the auto, Tovi attacked Danny with the Dao, and killed him on the spot. His frightened friends reportedly fled the scene in a hurry.
The motive behind the killing: Tovi wanted to snatch the auto and sell it for Rs.20, 000, a sum of money he had stolen from his father.
Tovi, who went home on June 8 from hostel, stole the Rs.20, 000 from his dad, which was borrowed to pay off a debt in the bank. He spent the money paying for drinks, which he shared with his friends. He also bought a mobile phone worth Rs. 9450.
