Zeliangrongs in Manipur to go on agitation

Memo to CM says inaction of the Manipur govt has ‘provoked the sentiments’ of the Zeliangrong community

IMPHAL, APRIL 24 (MExN): The Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur and Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur, have submitted a memorandum to Manipur Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi Singh, vis-à-vis the physical assault of six Zeliangrong students along with burning down their rented house belonging to Poukindai (Mathew Gangmei) by locking them inside the house on April 13, 2014, and another house belonging to Dinbui Gangmei burnt down in the same area on April 19, 2014 at Lamkhai Bazar, Jiribam.

The memorandum has notified the Government of Manipur that the Zeliangrong community will agitate against this from April 24 midnight to April 25 midnight to make sure justice is done to the victims.  The memorandum, signed by general secretary Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur, Poudin Riamei, and ZSUM chairman, Kadijanbou Pamei, urged the authority concerned to book the culprits of the incident at the earliest. The two bodies also demanded “adequate compensation” to the owner of the houses that were burnt down by the miscreants. Culprits involved in these heinous crimes, stated the organizations, “should be brought to book according to the law of the land as a deterrent from committing further crimes.” They also asked for the assaulted victims to be given “proper medical reimbursement and counseling to recover from traumatic ordeal due to physical injuries and mental abused by the criminal gangs.”

“The inaction of the government of Manipur in bringing forth a pacific settlement on the prevailing flare-up has provoked the sentiments of the whole Zeliangrong community and compelled us to go ahead with an agitation from 24th midnight till 25thmidnight, so that justice is done to unfortunate victims,” stated the memorandum. Further, “As such, Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur and Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur will have no inhabitation to go for another form of stringent agitation if our demands are not taken into account. For which act of your kind prompt action is sought.”
