ZSUN calls off proposed indefinite closure of educational offices in Peren

Peren, November 3 (MExN): The Zeliang Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) has called off the proposed indefinite closure of educational offices across Peren district, which was set to be enforced from November 4.

The decision came following a meeting with the Principal Director of the Directorate of School Education on October 29.

According to the union, during the meeting, the Principal Director assured them that various grievances raised by the union would be addressed, expressing confidence that action would be taken at the earliest. Accordingly, the ZSUN called off the strike with a strong belief that “whatever has been discussed and agreed upon will be honoured in its true spirit.”

The union also lauded the Principal Director’s sincerity in resolving the issue.

Additionally, the ZSUN acknowledged the timely intervention of Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Planning and Transformation, National Highway, TR Zeliang, in the agitation against the recent rationalisation exercise undertaken by the School Education Department of Nagaland. This intervention led to a breakthrough in the nearly month-long agitation, which had taken the form of closures of educational offices across the district, the ZSUN said.

The union also commended Zeliang’s understanding of the core issues presented to the Principal Director and his role in ensuring justice for deserving schools.

“We look forward to working closely in the education sector and other areas concerning the welfare of our people even in the days ahead,” it added.

The ZSUN expressed gratitude to Hiazu Meru, Deputy Commissioner of Peren, for his active involvement as a mediator between the department and the union. It also commended the Education Department of Peren District for their cooperation and patience throughout the entire agitation.

The union further acknowledged the contributions of the Mpai Students’ Union, Punglwa Students’ Union, Tesen Students’ Union, Nkialwa Students’ Union, Tening Town Youth Organization, and Kuki Students’ Organisation, Nagaland, for their physical and moral support.

“Your proactive involvement and cooperation were the driving forces that encouraged us to work even more diligently for this noble cause,” it added.

Among its demands, the ZSUN is calling for enhancements to educational infrastructure and the resolution of staff shortages in Peren District schools.
