The 9th death anniversary of Asu Isak Chishi Swu was observed with a memorial talk reflecting on his life, legacy and sacrifices at Town Hall, Zunheboto on June 28.
The event organised by Green Club, was graced by Vikuto Zhimomi, GB and Former President of Nagaland GB Federation, as the speaker. In his address, Zhimomi emphasised the profound contributions of Isak Chishi Swu to the Naga freedom struggle. He recounted personal memories and shared how Isak, along with his peers, began their journey for Naga self-determination inspired by the global wave of decolonization following World War-II.
Born in 1929 and educated in Shillong, Isak Swu was a visionary leader who joined the Naga National Council (NNC) and played a pivotal role in resisting Indian military intervention in Nagaland. Zhimomi highlighted how the Naga people, under leaders like Isak, celebrated their first declaration of independence on August 14 and endured immense hardship and sacrifices during that period.
The speaker recalled Isak’s unwavering faith in God, which shaped his leadership and commitment. He also mentioned Th Muivah, who joined the movement with support from Isak’s brother, emphasized the importance of unity among all Naga communities.
Zhimomi further shared that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had held six rounds of talks with Naga leaders. However, divisions among the Nagas continued to challenge the peace process. He encouraged the younger generation to learn more about the Naga political movement and offered to share his knowledge and experiences with anyone interested.
The programme was chaired by Tavinto K Sumi, President of Green Club Zunheboto. Rev Seksim Kasar, General Secretary of the Council of Naga Churches (CNC), offered the invocation. Introductory remarks were delivered by L Holuto Ayemi. He stated that the Green Club, a non-profit organisation has been organizing the death anniversary of Asu Isak Chishi Swu for some time now, as no other organization has come forward to host it. This event should ideally be initiated by apex bodies, given the visionary leadership of Asu Isak Chishi Swu, and observed in a grand manner, he remarked.
A moving drama was performed by students of Noto Theological College, followed by the release of a tribute video dedicated to Isak Chishi Swu and a special musical presentation by the Hope Messengers.
A prayer for Isak Swu’s family was offered by Pastor Kughavi V Chishi of NCRC, Zunheboto. Vote of thanks was given by Pihoto Kiho, CAO of the Sumi Region, NSCN (GPRN) while benediction was said by Nupato Zhimo, Assistant Youth Leader of Zunheboto Town Sumi Baptist Church.
