ZUNHEBOTO, JULY 3 (MExN): The Zunheboto Forest Division observed International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3, with an awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the harmful effects of single-use plastic bags and promoting sustainable alternatives.

The observance began with an awareness session for the staff of the Forest Division at the office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Zunheboto. As part of the programme, Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS, Divisional Forest Officer, along with staff members and representatives from YouthNet, visited the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Zunheboto.

DFO Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS, along with Forest Department staff and YouthNet representatives, called on Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj at his office in Zunheboto.

During the visit, the team emphasised the importance of shifting away from single-use plastic bags and encouraged the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth, jute, and paper bags for daily use.

Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj, IAS, spoke on the health hazards posed by plastic use, particularly the ingestion of microplastics, and stressed the need to reduce the use of plastic products in households. He also urged the Forest Department to conduct mass awareness campaigns to educate the public on the broader environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution.

The day’s activities concluded with a poster and sticker campaign conducted across the town to spread awareness on the ill effects of plastic use.
