Zunheboto, October 11 (MExN): Following the ban on sale of tobacco products in Zunheboto town which was ordered by the Deputy Commissioner in May this year, the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Zunheboto has been working out ways to make the district free from tobacco.

Updates from the NTCP Media Cell on Sunday informed of the various activities it has taken up in their effort to rid the district of tobacco.

It said that team has been visiting many schools and places under Zunheboto district and creating awareness among the people about the harmful impacts of tobacco on health and advising the people to stop consuming tobacco products.

On October 11 too, the NTCP Zunheboto team led by Dr Esther Chophy Ngullie and Bonoto visited Sukhalu village where the people were made aware about the harmful diseases that are caused due to chewing of tobacco products.

People were made known about the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) under which the selling and consuming of tobacco products is illegal and punishable, especially in and around the school areas, the update stated.

Many diseases like chest pain, breathing problems, breast cancer, and health abnormalities are caused due to chewing tobacco products ass these products are made of harmful chemicals, it said. 

The team also informed that counselling services on how to leave consuming of tobacco is being given at the Dental ward in the District Hospital Zunheboto from Monday to Friday. 

The Media Cell meanwhile informed that previously 12 schools and 3 villages have already been declared as Tobacco-free Zones and more places are coming up to join the tobacco free status.

The team along with the Police and Administration also conducted an enforcement drive on Saturday in Zunheboto town where a huge amount of tobacco products were seized and later destroyed by the team.
